Burntwood RFC 06 Veseyans RFC 22 Veseyans RFC took another step towards promotion with a strong performance against old rivals Burntwood RFC. Requiring a win to maintain pressure on promotion chasers Leek and Tamworth, the V’s travelled to Chasewater trying to claim their first away victory at Burntwood for a few years. Playing against the elements for the first 40 mins, V’s began strongly. V’s put pressure on the home side, who eventually conceded a penalty, which Sammy Irvine converted to give Veseyans the lead. Great scrummaging work by the V’s pack saw Burntwood drives for the line thwarted, however the pressure told, with a penalty under the posts converted to level the game at 3-3. Looking to make amends, V’s immediately put pressure back onto Burntwood. A powerful break by Zak Feaunati and good hands by Sam Forrester and Matt Dell saw Pete Atkins crash over the line for his third try in as many games. Irvine converted to stretch V’s lead. Another penalty for Burntwood ended the first half 10-6. With the wind and slope now behind them, Veseyans took control of the game. The Veseyans pack began to dominate at the set pieces and in open play, which provided the V’s backs with a platform to attack. A set piece move saw centre Alex Collyer bulldoze his way through four tackles and cross the try line. V’s continued to press during the final stages of the game, and were rewarded as some excellent phase play was finished off by Zak Feaunati after Matt Dell had cut a precise line off fly half Irvine. |
