Royals beat Roms to keep home run

Sep 2 2011

Monday - Sutton Coldfield Town 3 – Romulus 1 Saturday - Brigg Town 2 - Sutton Coldfield Town 1

THE Royals earned bragging rights with ground share rivals Romulus with a 3-1 win on Monday and maintained their unbeaten home record for the season.

Early in the first half saw chances for both sides, but Sutton took advantage in the 42nd minute. A corner from the left found Ed Booth, who headed home to score his second goal in three days.

Sutton’s lead was doubled just before half time when Matt Dodd’s low cross across the goalmouth was tapped in by Jon Jones.

Another even half saw Sutton go 3-0 ahead on 68 minutes. A corner from the right was cleared as far as Dean Rathbone, whose cross found Stuart McNaught at the back post.

Romulus reduced the deficit three minutes later, when a cross from the left evaded the Sutton defence and fell to Marcus Brown, who slotted home for a consolation goal.

On Saturday Sutton came back down to earth after three wins on the trot when they travelled to Brigg Town.

The first half was evenly matched and it wasn’t until the 44th minute that Brigg went ahead when a ball through the middle split the defence.

Appeals for offside were ignored and Bruno Holden slid the ball past Sutton’s goalie Niall Cooper.

After the break sustained pressure from the Royals paid off in the 65th minute when a corner from Jackson was met with a great header from Booth to level the scores.

The game seemed to be heading for a draw when a free kick was given just outside the Sutton box.

Ray Ford scuffed his shot but it eluded the defence and left keeper Cooper watching the ball creep just inside the post.

The Royals are second from top in The Evo-Stik League Northern Premier, First Division South, with 12 points in six games.

Tomorrow they travel to Bedford United and on Tuesday they host Coleshill Town in the Birmingham Senior Cup.
