Old Yardleians 5 Spartans 36 A break from league and cup action saw Spartans travel south, and free from the normal weekly pressures, they turned in a lively performance to secure a deserved win. A penalty put the Blacks in front before ’Yards hit back with a try against the run of play, but Spartans showing speed of thought, quickly added three tries from Tom Harbidge, Terry Garbett and Alex Stewart for a 24 - 3 half time lead. A number of changes saw opportunities for Spartans young and old, with Gavin Dyke and Jamie Parker running freely as the men in black moved the ball well, only for three tries to go begging as the final pass proved too much. Second teenage debutante John Roden blended in very well with his fellow forwards, and Spartans finally added to their score with a second try for the centre Harbridge. The last ten minutes saw a personal milestone for Lee Westwood, coming off the bench to claim a senior appearance in all of the past four decades, and the old/new combination saw him feed young Roden for a dream debut try to seal the game. Spartans return to league action this week as they travel to Balsall & Berkswell. (3pm). |
