Brilliant Ball lights up a tight fixture

Mar 12 2010

Woodford Utd 1 Sutton Coldfield Town1

A tough game was in prospect when Sutton visited in-form Woodford United and that proved to be the case.

The match began with early Sutton pressure and a shot-cum-cross from Craig Marshall forced a last minute save from Matt Findlay in the Woodford goal as he tipped the ball over the crossbar.

Against the run of play Woodford took the lead in the 20th minute when Sutton skipper Phil Male failed to head clear and only succeeded in heading the ball straight up into the air and Neil King picked up the loose ball and skipped around the stranded Male to fire in a shot which was half blocked by Steve Jackson in goal but he could not prevent the ball from going into the net.

The second half began with Sutton still trying to find the equaliser and a good cross from Jamille Matt found Ed Booth with his back to the goal but he still managed to get in a header but with no real power to trouble Findlay.

Jackson was then called upon to make a good save from Lewis Travers.

Sutton brought on Richard Ball to play with three strikers and went to a back three formation and this produced the equaliser in the 80th minute when Ball collected the ball 25 yards out and with everyone screaming at him to pass neatly flicked it over his marker and as the ball fell volleyed it over the keeper for a brilliant individual goal.

Sutton now threw everything at getting the winner and only desperate defending prevented them coming away with the three points they needed to keep up the pressure for a playoff place.

l On Tuesday night Sutton beat Bedworth Utd 4-2 away, the goals coming courtesy of Murrall, Matt, Booth and Ball.

This Saturday they take on Chesham United at home, kick off 3pm.

* On Tuesday, Boldmere St Michael drew 0-0 away at Biddulph Victoria in the Aspire Midlands Alliance and 0-0 against Rocester last Saturday.

Tomorrow, they are away to Westfields.
