Aston snatch win

Mar 19 2010

Bridgnorth 14 Aston Old Edwardians 16

Aston kept their slim promotion chances from Midlands 2 (West) North alive with a tight but well deserved win against mid table Bridgnorth.

It was Bridgnorth who started the brighter, breaching the Aston line after 27 minutes to score under the posts, leaving the extra two points a formality.

Aston hit back immediately, and following a long distance penalty attempt from Blake Bennett that fell just short, Bridgnorth failed to find touch, and No8 Mick Tate ran hard to set up a ruck from which Bridgnorth transgressed again. This time Bennett was successful with the resulting penalty to narrow the score to 7-3. Bennett was to repeat the act on the stroke of half time to make it 7-6.

Continued pressure forced Bridgnorth into desperate defence and it was no surprise that a yellow card was issued for handling in a ruck, shortly followed by a second sin-binning for the same offence.

Aston took advantage of the numerical superiority when centre Dean Morris set up the ruck from where flanker Chris Balmforth was on hand to run in from 20 metres. Bennett added the extras.

With the referee indicating the final play of the game, Bridgnorth threw everything at Aston, and were rewarded with another converted try.

Aston have a free Saturday this weekend (March 20) and then play Lordswood Dixonians in a rearranged league game on Easter Saturday.
