Aston in shining form as they clinch the win

Mar 12 2010

Aston Old Edwardians 47 Shrewsbury 25

Aston returned to winning ways in the Midlands 2 (West) North, blitzing Shrewsbury with an eight try romp in a pulsating game.

From a the kick off, Aston secured an attacking scrum, Darran Gardener crashing over for a try with barely 60 seconds on the clock.

Whilst the touchline conversion was missed, Blake Bennett made amends two minutes later with a penalty to put Aston 8-0 up.

Full back Rob Chesner made a superb 40 metre break before popping the ball to Gareth Jones, who ran in unopposed under the posts. This was followed by a catch and drive from a line out from which lock Paul Finnemore forced his way over to take the score to 20-0.

Shrewsbury picked up what appeared at the time a consolation try when their centre cantered in under the posts to make the conversion a formality.

Winger Gareth Jones then beat three defenders to score his second try of the half to make the score 25-10 at half time.

Shrewsbury came back strongly in the second half with a penalty immediately from the kick off, quickly followed by another converted try.

Shrewsbury had two further opportunities to narrow the gap from penalties, but both drifted wide of the uprights.

Stung into action, Aston ran in four further tries after a Shrewsbury forward was sin-binned, the scorers being Chris Cheney, Paul Horrocks, Lea Ross and Chris Balmforth.

Afterwards, coach Allan Mitchell praised the performances of the two debutants, Gareth Jones and prop Ian Turner.
