Royals eye up trophy success after defeat

Royals 0 Rainworth Miners Welfare 1

Sutton will be looking for more cup success at St Neots Town in the FA trophy tomorrow after being outplayed for spells by a determined Rainworth Miners Welfare last Saturday.

Having disposed of Rugby Town midweek in the Trophy the Royals started brightly against Rainworth.

A long range shot by Luke Chapman had the visitors keeper scrambling across his goal.

This was followed up a few minutes later with a shot from Jonathon Jones that hit the bottom of the post with the keeper well beaten.

Rainworth kept plugging away and slowly they began to get a foothold in the game and began to exert pressure in midfield.

A great one-handed save by Niall Cooper in the Sutton goal kept out a fierce shot from Danny Bacon.

But minutes later a trip by Jones on Sean Cann gave Rainworth the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot.

It was Cann who took the spot kick but fired against the post and let Sutton off the hook.

The second half began with Rainworth getting the only goal when Ed Booth got the wrong side of centre forward Cann, who lobbed the advancing keeper.

Sutton made a number of changes but every effort came to nothing against a staunch Rainworth defence.

A last ditch couple of corners gave Booth two chances to get his head to the ball but both were well held by the keeper.

Tomorrow (Saturday) The Royals are away to St Neots Town in the FA trophy, KO 3pm.

The Royals are fourth in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier - First Division South.

Their next league game is on Tuesday away to Kidsgrove Athletic, 7.45pm.
