Good defending sees Sutton to overdue win

Feb 8 2010

Warwick University 1st XI 1

Sutton Coldfield 1st XI 2

Sutton finally gained the result their recent performances had merited with a long overdue victory in Bodykraft Midlands One.

Fortunately for Sutton, keeper Jon Phipps was in inspired form between the posts and a string of excellent saves prevented the students from taking the lead.

The slice of luck that had evaded Sutton over recent weeks finally came as Paul Terleski clipped a low tomahawk shot that slid across an unsighted keeper and into the bottom corner.

Sutton’s second goal came in the second half from a classic counter attack, led by young Tom Homer from right back. His thunderous reverse strike was only parried by the keeper and James Vyse was on hand to smuggle the ball in from a few yards out. A well worked Warwick penalty corner finally saw Phipps beaten and set up a nervous last 15 minutes, but Sutton’s best defensive performance of the season meant that the students had few chances to level the scoring.

Harborne 4th XI 4

Sutton Coldfield Men’s 5th XI 5

After two defeats on the trot, the 5ths were keen to get back to winning ways, but faced a tough challenge against second in the table Harborne 4s.

And although Harborne played the better hockey, the whole Sutton team worked hard and made life uncomfortable for the visitors, with man of the match Jeff “Haystacks” Smith in outstanding form in goal.

Elsewhere the Men’s 6th team lost 2-0 to Leicester 5ths.

Sutton Coldfield Ladies 5ths 0

Leamington 3rds 3

PLAYING with a mix of regular and very inexperienced players Sutton played well to make it scoreless at half-time.

The second half saw Leamington step up their attack and they scored in the first ten minutes with a fairly soft goal.

Their second goal was a screamer from the edge of the D and the final goal was an unlucky deflection that had already been saved twice.

The scoreline hides the fact that Alison made a number of good saves and three defenders between them stopped at least five goals on the line.

Everyone worked really hard and the team came away feeling very positive.

Young Amy on the wing won Girl of the Game.
