ONE month after it was cancelled a second attempt will be made to hold the British National Cyclo Cross Championships in Sutton Park this weekend, which is free for spectators. Fears for public safety and concerns over access for emergency vehicles and parking forced the cancellation of the prestigious event on January 7 as heavy snow gripped the Midlands. Now with cloudy weather forecast with the odd splash of sunshine, the cream of Britain’s cyclo cross talent will once again descend on Sutton Park. In fact the only big name missing will be last year’s bronze medalist Roger Hammond who, racing for a pro-team, will be taking part in the Tour of Qatar instead in the Middle East. Otherwise watch out for last year’s winner Jody Crawforth as he attempts to retain his title, as well as a host of other races as well as titles are decided from under 10s to veterans, ladies, and of course, the men’s elite race. Event co-ordinator Brian Furniss of British Cycling said: “Only some 30 riders couldn’t make the re-arranged event but even so well over 500 entries will be there over the weekend, well above previous levels.” Furniss put the growth in enthusiasm down to the Beijing effect of Britain’s success at the summer Olympics in 2008, the success of British riders in the Tour de France and the growing awareness that cycling is not only clean, green and cost effective, but good fun as well. “We always get good crowds and there will be plenty for them to see with 10 events over the weekend,” said Furniss. Cyclo cross has been likened to Formula 1 on two wheels, with plenty of thrills and spills during races that last from 40 minutes to just over the hour. The first event on Saturday is at 9.50am with the under 10s championship climaxing at 2.30pm with the 40+ veterans championship. On Sunday the action starts 10.15am with the under 23 men’s championship with the senior men’s at 2.15pm. |
