Sutton travelled to near neighbours Atherstone to see if they could lay yet another of their ‘bogey teams’ after seeing off one of them at AFC Sudbury in mid week. But it was not to be so. Sutton began brightly enough and began to boss the game. Richard Ball was first to have a crack at goal only to see the ball flash past the post. This was followed by a far better effort from Craig Owen that saw Nathan Woakes in the opponents’ goal pull off a great save. It was all Sutton but Atherstone were not giving any ground. Another shot from Owen just passed the wrong side of the post with the keeper beaten. A chance fell to Jamille Matt but he scuffed his shot. The second half began with the best chance of the game when Ball was put through one on one with the keeper but shot straight at him. It was inevitable that with all the pressure and nothing to show for it, Sutton would concede the first goal. On the 50th minute, a free kick was floated over the defence and Tom Guiney stole in at the far post with a diving header that found the back of the net. Sutton threw on an extra attacker and within minutes, Craig Marshall had the keeper making a string of saves. With Sutton throwing everything at Atherstone, it was almost inevitable that they would concede to a breakaway goal and that proved to be the case when right on the final whistle Luke Keen broke away and had an easy chance with only the keeper to beat * This Saturday, February 6, Sutton take on Biggelswade in the Zamaretto Midlands Division. |
