IMPROVEMENT works at Sutton Coldfield Railway Station are almost complete.
Modernisation of the station, including new lifts, a refurbished footbridge and bridge renewal, have been taking place as part of a Network Rail overhaul of its stations along the cross city line to make them more accessible.
The completion of work at the station, built in 1862, will be marked in December with a visit from Andrew Mitchell MP, Secretary of State for International Development.
Councillor Tom Ansell, lead member for Rail and Metro at Centro, the regions transport authority, said: This further investment at Sutton Coldfield will make it easier for anyone to go by train and thats vitally important with demand for rail travel now running at its highest level in more than 70 years.
Work is also under way at Northfield and Selly Oak stations to provide step-free routes, including lifts, onto the platforms.
The s5million project has been funded by the governments Access for All programme, which aims to make journeys easier for disabled passengers, parents with pushchairs and those with heavy luggage.
