Bid to stop booze sales to underage

Feb 8 2010

SUTTON Coldfield police have pledged to clamp-down on underage drinking.

Officers working with Birmingham City Council, will carry out test purchases, high visibility patrols, and pub and club walk-throughs this week in Trinity, New Hall and Four Oaks wards.

A pub could lose its licence if underage drinkers are found, as police will gather evidence to put to the council’s licensing committee.

Underage students will help with test purchases in off- licences and if alcohol is sold to them, the licensee will receive an £80 fine.

Home Office guidelines state that if such outlets fail the test purchase twice in three months, the council have the power to remove their licence.

Sutton Coldfield’s licensing officer Deano Walker said: “By stamping out the sale of alcohol to youths, there is less chance of crime and disorder in our local communities.”
