A wii round up: NHL 2K9, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic Unleashed

Dec 5 2008

The games are coming thick and fast folks, here's another three for you.

First up is NHl 2k9 on the Wii, already a revelation on other formats, this is arguably the best hockey game to date, this Wii version adds to the already great success.

It doesn't feel as total as it does on the 360 for example, it plays out in classic hockey style and in terms of a gaming experience I can't complain too much. Graphically it leaves a bit to be desired, it's acceptable rather than excellent.

The The Wii Remote is fully used for shooting, passing and even fighting and face-offs, gameplay is strong and it was good to feel the wii remote was used to it's full advantages.

A solid Hockey game based on a truly great established game already, the first wii hockey game and a good benchmark for future efforts.

Score 3/5

Sonic Unleashed

Everybody's favourite spiky haired little blue hedgehog is back, I have lost track how long he has been going now, years of success can't be criticised though.

This latest lunatic paced game uses a new 'hedgehog engine' which plays around with a number of viewpoints and mixes 2d and 3d in to the pot very nicely.

The look of this game is very much Sonic for the next generation and it does look impressive indeed. The levels are a mix of racing levels and platform levels, both work well, in our house we loved the racing levels the most. There is plenty of depth to the game and lots to master in terms of combat etc.

The game is wonderfully bright and appealing to the eye, the characters are great and playing it is a real blast.

Everyone should be able to pick up this Sonic game and be pretty engrossed.

Score 4/5

Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant.

Another old favourite getting a makeover on the Wii is Crash Bandicoot - wonderfully suited to the wii it's another welcome return - just at the right time to fill the christmas stockings!

I won't relay the plot to you - I didn't get it. I am writing this review whilst watching over the shoulder of the kids who love it.

It seems as fast-paced and colourful of the Crash games of old, full of adventure and a need for lighnting quick reflexes. Shake the wii controller to get that trademark spin!

This is aimed at younger kids and in all honesty is fairly easy for kids over the age of ten, it is very bright and quirky with some excellent graphics and platforming action.

Crash will never leave us and if they carry on making games like this then there is no reason for them to stop.

Score 3/5
